Detail of a page from the codex Troana Cortesianus, also know as the Madrid Codex, One of only four surviving Mayan codices it is composed entirely of almanacs organized in terms of the 260 day ritual calendar used throughout Mesoamerica for divination and prophecy. Detail of the aged moon goddess identified with the waning moon. The water issuing from her body and the serpent headdress is a reference to the rainy season. Mexico. Mayan. Radiocarbon dated to A.D 1230+/ 130.
