John Smith of Demerara'. John Smith (1790-1824) was an English missionary who travelled to the West Indies to work as a priest at a plantation chapel, preaching to the slaves employed there. Sentenced to death after supposedly encouraging a slave rebellion, Smith died in his cell before his execution could be carried out. Location unknown, circa 1820.
