Stated with the letter., dike-break, Netherlands under the Habsburgs, Period, 1530-11-05, A monochrome engraved scene shows a windswept landscape with a large leafless tree leaning to one side and its long branches stretching across the sky, textured clouds and lines filling the background. In the midground there is a turbulent body of water with a breaking wave and distant low shoreline. In the foreground a group of figures stands on the shore; one central adult figure leans back with hands raised toward the face, a second adult beside them reaches upward and tilts the head back, and a small child at the second adult’s side clutches their garment. On the ground near the water’s edge two smaller figures lie or crouch among tall grasses and bent reeds, and a fallen branch lies across the foreground. The overall image is rendered in fine hatched lines and crosshatching, with varied textures for sky, water, tree bark, clothing, and vegetation.
