Print is part of an album., printmaker: Jean Lepautre, publisher: Pierre Mariette (II), Paris, grantor of privilege: Louis XIV (King of France), c. 1655 - c. 1657, Louis, An ornate vertical engraving showing a framed decorative panel with an elaborate border of parallel lines enclosing a central composition dominated by flowing drapery, garlands, and carved foliage; near the top two reclining cherubic figures sit among leafy scrolls flanking a circular medallion that contains a small seascape with a rider on a rearing horse and distant hills; beneath the medallion two standing female figures face slightly towards each other, each wearing flowing robes and surrounded by heavy swags of flowers and cascading foliage, their arms supporting a garland that meets at a central ornamental mask; larger shelllike volutes and leafy acanthus forms surround the upper and side margins, and additional cherubic figures and winged faces are integrated into the ornamental architecture; the whole design is rendered in fine linear engraving with dense hatching and crosshatching creating shadow and texture.
