The description is, 1609., St. John the Evangelist writing the Gospel, usually the eagle present, A seated figure in draped robes leans on a table with one elbow propped and a hand supporting the head, the other hand holding a writing instrument over an open book; the figure has curly hair and a contemplative facial expression. The table has a carved base and an inkwell and stacked books sit nearby. Behind the figure is a background with vertical columns and horizontal lined shading. At the figure’s side on the floor is a bird with textured feathers perched on rounded forms. The scene is rendered in fine, engraved lines with crosshatching and stippling, and the visible tones are monochrome.
