In the foreground a woman in a long flowing dress and a headscarf embraces a man in a military-style uniform who holds her around the waist. Several other uniformed men with bicorn hats and long coats stand nearby, one facing the viewer with his hands clasped and another holding a long rifle or musket upright. To the far right a soldier with a tall hat and a strap across his chest stands in profile holding his weapon. Behind the central figures a row of shirtless people stand shoulder to shoulder, and tall spear-like staffs rise upward among them. The ground is textured and the scene is densely hatched with fine lines, creating shading and intricate detail throughout the foliage, clothing, and figures.
