Amsterdam: J. van Gulik, 1802., dog, education, index finger forwards, pointing, indicating, A monochrome engraved scene shows a narrow street or courtyard flanked by tall buildings with arched and rectangular openings and a distant church steeple rising above rooftops; a leafy tree occupies the left edge beside a wooden fence and an open doorway. In the foreground a seated stool holds pottery and a low table, and a large barrel stands nearby with a dog leaning over it with its head inside a bowl; another dog stands alert to the right. A youth or young man wearing a cap and simple clothing stands beside the barrel holding a long handled tool or mallet and gesturing with one hand. The ground is textured with cobbles or paving, and architectural cornices, windows, and masonry details are rendered with fine crosshatching.
