To the right and overlapping the frame, a chubby child with curly hair and a cloth draped around the lower body sits on a ledge, reaching toward the man's face with a small brush or pen. On the left edge of the frame, laurel leaves and a ribboned object rest beside a rolled sheet partially unrolled on the ledge. The lower portion of the image shows a rectangular plinth with crosshatched shading beneath the figures.
