On some prints it is indicated at the top left which number in the series it concerns., the soldier, the soldier's life, A detailed engraved portrait shows a man in profile wearing a tall, plumed hat with decorative banding and a tassel, his face framed by muttonchop sideburns and a mustache, and his gaze directed outward; he is dressed in a uniform with a high collar, a sash across his chest fastened by a decorative clasp, and patterned sleeves, all rendered with fine line work; the figure is set within an arched frame against a textured background, with an ornamental circular emblem below the arch and decorative borders surrounding the composition.
