The figures in the procession are provided with further explanation below each row., printmaker: Simon Fokke, Amsterdam, after drawing by, after design by Johannes le Francq van Berkhey, publisher: Hendrik Coster, Leiden, 1776, paper, etching, height 202 mm x width 412 mm, periodic celebrations, popular feasts, Period, 1776-01-24, A wide, horizontal engraving divided into three stacked friezes filled with procession scenes, each frieze showing a continuous line of figures, horses, sledges, riders, and walkers in period dress; the top band features mounted soldiers and attendants carrying torches and lances, elaborately dressed riders, ornamental sledges pulled by horses, and groups of men in helmets and capes; the middle band shows banners and flags, musicians blowing horns, horse-drawn sledges with seated figures and standing attendants, armed men with spears and shields, and a mix of robed and uniformed figures marching beside decorated horses; the bottom band contains further mounted figures and riders with plumed helmets, attendants bearing torches, more ornate sledges with seated persons, standard-bearers and grouped soldiers, all rendered in fine line work with detailed costumes, harnesses, and ornamental trappings against a plain background.
