One man at the left steadies the cross with both hands, wearing a loose garment and a cap with a rounded top. Another man near the center grasps the cross and holds a pole topped with a broad axe-like blade, his clothing folded around his head and shoulders. A pair of men to the right pull and push, one wearing a brimmed hat with a feather and the other with a turban-like head covering; their faces show effort. The scene is set against a background of densely hatched foliage and a textured ground, with shading and crosshatching throughout the figures and landscape.
