The foreground is dominated by the rounded haunches of horses and the backs and limbs of men striding over uneven, textured ground. Middle ground figures include a group of soldiers with spears and helmets, a man holding a staff with a suspended helmet and plume, and another man turned to look over his shoulder. In the background the gateway stands with columns and a decorative entablature, small groups of people are gathered atop and near it, and flowing banners and pennants ripple above the crowd against a hatched sky. The engraving uses dense linework and crosshatching to model musculature, drapery, architectural elements, and the contours of the landscape.
