Numbered lower left: 3 and 2., printmaker: Master of the Dice, Italy, after design by Michiel Coxie (I), c. 1530 - c. 1560, Master of the Dice, Michiel Coxie (I), printmaker, after design by, paper, engraving, intaglio printmaking technique, engraving with plate tone, height 196 mm x width 228 mm, A detailed black and white engraving shows a classical architectural setting with large fluted columns and a stone platform, a group of standing and seated figures in flowing drapery gathered on the steps, several of the figures are nude or partially draped, some holding or touching small children, others clasping or supporting each other, a bowed older man with a beard sits among the group while a woman in a headscarf stands nearby, to the right a cluster of men and youths interact closely with one youth reaching toward another’s head, above them a cloud formation contains two winged putti, one of whom leans toward the other while a larger semi-nude figure reclines on the cloud, architectural buildings with pitched roofs appear in the background behind the columns, the overall composition is rendered with fine hatching and crosshatching lines.
