Piranesi conducted preliminary studies for more than eight years for this series of 250 plates, which was published in four volumes. He produced the prints between ca. 1756 and 1757. The series also includes prints by or after other printmakers, including Francesco Bianchini and Girolamo Rossi., ruin of a building, architecture, plan, Coelius, Nymphaeum of Nero, An overhead architectural plan rendered in fine black lines on a light background shows a roughly irregular island shape with rocky edges and shaded terrain; within the island there is a large symmetrical building complex with circular and rectangular halls, concentric curved seating or corridor patterns, small square and rectangular rooms, dotted pathways, and rectangular colonnaded features; additional detached circular structures and rounded platforms appear near the bottom and right edges of the island, with shaded concentric rings indicating elevation or terraces; faint dashed lines and small rectangular markers connect parts of the plan, and there are shaded boxed reliefs at the lower left depicting cutaway stone shapes; the entire drawing is framed by a thin border and surrounded by areas of dense fine hatching.
