To the left a ruined architectural column rises with sculpted panels, and a distant line of trees and small buildings stretches across the middle ground. In the foreground figures and animals occupy an open plain; people stand and walk in small groups, some mounted on horses and others leading pack animals, while a large animal seen from behind moves toward the center. Rocks and textured ground occupy the immediate foreground, and the sky above is filled with closely spaced horizontal hatch lines. The entire scene is rendered in fine, delicate ink lines on pale paper.
