Atelier, Ewijkshoeve (original title), House behind a fruit tree, print, printmaker: Willem Bastiaan Tholen (signed by artist), 1870 - 1914, paper, zinc etching, drypoint, intaglio printmaking technique, height 243 mm x width 182 mm, rural housing, eg country-house, villa, cottage, Den Dolder, A monochrome etched scene shows a weathered wooden building partially obscured by a tall tree with branches and abundant leaves; the tree trunk rises from the foreground and leans slightly, with textured bark and foliage extending across the composition. In front of the building a vertical slatted fence runs along the lower part of the image, and a narrow doorway or window opening is visible on the building’s side. Rooflines and a slender vertical post or pole project upward behind the tree, and dense shrubbery and foliage cluster near the right edge. The ground in the foreground contains grass, scattered leaves, and rough textures, and varied cross-hatched lines and stippling create tonal shifts across the entire image.
