In the foreground a lion attacking one of the hunters., printmaker: Antonio Tempesta, Rome, dedicated to: Charles of Valois (Duke of Angoulême), 1608, 1621, paper, etching, colour, hand-coloured in grey, height 203 mm x width 283 mm, This print is part of a series of eight prints (dedication) with hunting scenes., hunter, hunters hunting (NB: In 1988-1990 this notation denoted the concept of 43C11421 'hunters resting during the hunt'), A detailed monochrome engraving shows a chaotic scene with rearing horses and mounted figures in motion across a rugged landscape; in the foreground a pair of horses dominate, one rearing with flared nostrils and flowing mane and the other twisting as a rider raises a long spear above his head; a fallen lion with a human figure beneath it lies at the riders' feet, the lion's face turned toward the viewer; additional riders and horses form a clustered melee to the right and left, some shown in profile and others partially obscured, with riders brandishing spears and wearing varied headgear; the background features rolling hills, distant mountains, scattered trees and palms, and a small group of mounted figures observed on a rise, while fine linework throughout renders musculature, flowing manes, textured foliage and clouded sky.
