These prints were published in two volumes from 1777 onwards., rowing-boat, canoe, the flight into Egypt: Mary, Joseph, the child (and sometimes others) on their way, Mary usually riding on an ass - BB - landscape predominant, river - HH - ideal landscapes, A sepia-toned landscape drawing showing a river in the foreground with a small rowboat holding two figures, one rowing and one leaning toward the rower, and leafy plants along the riverbank. Behind them a group of cattle stand near the water and graze on the shore. A large, leaning tree with dense foliage dominates the right side, its branches extending across much of the scene and sheltering smaller trees and shrubs beneath. Further back a path or clearing contains several standing figures and a rider on a horse, with clustered trees rising behind them. In the distance a wide expanse of land stretches to a distant shoreline with low hills and scattered trees, and several small birds are drawn in the sky above. The composition is rendered with fine line work and wash shading, with textured foliage and gently rippled water.
