In the foreground three men in period clothing with broad-brimmed hats are positioned on the riverbank; one stands holding a long staff, another kneels aiming a long musket toward the water, and a third sits reading or looking at a sheet while a dog lies nearby. Tall trees with sweeping, feathery foliage frame the left side, smaller trees and bushes fill the midground, and several birds fly in a layered sky of light clouds. The water reflects parts of the landscape and plants grow along the shore.
