Accompanying the print is a text sheet with verses., inscription: ''t Oude Stadhuys van Amsterdam, verbrant July 7, 1652', printmaker: Jan de Baen, Northern Netherlands, Jan de Baen, printmaker, materials by function, paper, ink, etching, pen, etching with pen in grey, height 270 mm x width 334 mm, A densely detailed black and white etching shows a city scene with tall buildings, one of which has arched openings on its ground level and ladders leaning against its facade, while thick curling smoke and flames billow from rooftops and a tall tower; numerous small human figures occupy the foreground and street, many in active poses such as climbing ladders, carrying others, gesturing, or running, and some figures lie on the ground; rubble and debris are scattered across the open space in front of the buildings; windows are visible in several structures, some with figures looking out, and chimneys rise above pitched roofs; the sky is filled with heavy cross-hatched shading and swirling smoke plumes.
