Cartoon of the Theatre Battle, ca. 1685, Caricature of the Poet Pluimer. Castellan of the Theatre, cartoon, print, Caricature of the mismanagement of Joan Pluimer and Govert Bidloo, who were regents of the Amsterdam Theatre from 1679 to 1681, and lessees from 1681 to 1687. In the center stands Pluimer with a feather on his head, a goblet of drink in his hand, and a lyre under his arm. In front of him is a servant with a pie in the shape of a deer. To his right is an old man raising a stick towards him. On the left in the foreground is a sorrowful personification of the Amsterdam Theatre with a beehive in her hand; to her left is the muse Melpomene. On the right in the foreground, a deceased man (possibly the co-tenant Pieter de la Croix, who died in 1687) is being stripped of his shroud by a man with a beret on his head and a money chest under his arm (probably Bidloo). The public wearing donkey ears walks through the dilapidated arch towards the theater but is chased away by Apollo. Apollo stands before a gate bearing, on the left, from top to bottom, the portraits of Pieter Corneliszoon Hooft, Joost van den Vondel, and Gerbrand Adriaensz. Bredero. Behind them is the satyr Marsyas tied to a tree. In the far background, Pegasus on Mount Parnassus. Inscription: 'Caricature of the Poet Pluimer.'
