Consul Lucius Junius Brutus, standing on the right, signals the executioner to carry out the sentence and behead his son. His other son has already been beheaded and lies at his feet. When a plot against the young Roman Republic came to light and Brutus' sons Titus and Tiberius turned out to be among the conspirators, he condemned them—just like the others—to death. The Vierschaar was a public court used by the bailiff and aldermen solely for pronouncing death sentences. Below the image are two columns with three lines of Latin text.
