This cartouche was specially designed by Romeyn de Hooghe for the second edition of the map (1687, the first edition appeared in 1647)., printmaker: Romeyn de Hooghe, 1687, paper, etching, engraving, height 255 mm x width 318 mm, Person, States General, Rijnland Water Board, ornaments, art, A detailed engraved decorative border fills the top of the image with swirling acanthus-like scrollwork and leafy flourishes rendered in fine parallel lines and crosshatching, forming a central cartouche topped by a wreath and ribbon motifs; beneath the central decoration two garlands of stylized flowers drape downward toward opposing clusters of fruit and foliage that include rounded fruits, berries, and leaves arranged in dense bunches; ornate ribbon banners with bold striped shading loop across the lower portion, framing an ornate shield or medallion with intricate interlaced scrollwork at its center; the entire composition is executed in sepia-toned ink on aged paper with visible engraving strokes and subtle paper texture.
