Feeding the hungry, The Seven Works of Mercy, print, Part of a series of seven works of mercy with depictions in an ancient setting., collector's mark: 'M', printmaker: François Hutin, Dresden, after design by François Hutin, c. 1730 - c. 1750, François Hutin, printmaker, Saxony, paper, etching, height 233 mm x width 164 mm, feeding the hungry, 'esuriens cibatur', one of the (seven) Acts of Mercy, A crowded interior scene rendered in fine pen lines shows a large draped canopy hanging overhead with heavy folds and ropes attached to the surrounding architecture; beneath it a semicircular niche holds a small sculpted figure on a pedestal, and decorative roundels and pilasters frame the background. In the foreground, a round table is surrounded by seated and leaning figures engaged with bowls and plates, their clothing consisting of flowing robes, wraps, and simple garments; one seated person wears a beaded necklace and holds a small bowl, another reaches toward a plate, and a standing figure bends forward carrying a bucket while another figure nearby holds a platter and wears a head covering. To the right, a draped archway and additional standing figures appear, and the floor shows irregular paving stones. The entire image is composed of closely hatched lines and crosshatching, creating detailed textures in fabric, skin, and stone.
