View of the Corn Exchange in Amsterdam, The new Corn Exchange in Amsterdam, from the front, Vuë de la Nouvelle Bourse aux grains à Amsterdam, du côté de la face, print, book illustration, printmaker: Willem Writs, 1770 - 1804, paper, etching, height 162 mm x width 205 mm, The print was first published in 1770 by, among others, Reinier Ottens and Pieter Yver, as part of a series of cityscapes: the 'Atlas of the City of Amsterdam, or Illustration of the most important views, buildings, antiquities and histories of Amsterdam, '. This series, begun in 1769, contained prints with textual commentary that could be bound into various publications about Amsterdam. The print was also used in: Atlas van de waereldberoemde koopstad Amsteldam, Amsterdam: Jan Barend Elwe, 1804. In that publication, a rear view of the Korenbeurs is printed below this print. Due to the cutting of the sheet, it is unclear whether the current print comes from the 1804 publication. Later state, numbered top right with pl. 1, used in publication from 1824., sailing-ship, sailing-boat, market-hall, parts of church exterior and annexes: tower, Korenbeurs (Amsterdam), An engraved scene showing a classical courtyard framed by large trees with detailed foliage, a central gated entrance topped with ornamental ironwork, and a colonnaded building with a pitched roof; many figures in period clothing are walking, standing, and conversing in the foreground and under the arcade, some wearing long coats and tricorn hats; masts of ships rise behind the buildings and a tall church tower with a spire is visible in the distance against a sky with clouds and small flying birds.
