Illumination for the East India House in Amsterdam, 1802, Illumination for the East India House in Amsterdam on the Peace Festival June 2, print, printmaker, publisher, Amsterdam, Netherlands, Jan Augustijn Swalm, paper, etching, engraving, height 171 mm x width 136 mm, A detailed engraved scene shows a large ornate facade or panel covered in a repeating decorative pattern, with an elaborate central arch containing a classical-style allegorical group of figures, one floating draped female figure reaching down toward other partially clothed figures amid swirling clouds and water, flanked by rectangular decorative panels that contain arrangements of ceremonial objects and armor. Above the arch a large cloud formation fills the upper area, from which numerous radiating lines and small flame-like motifs converge toward a central triangular shape containing an eye, while garlands or braided chains extend from the cloud to ornate urns on either side. In the lower foreground there are small groups of finely dressed people standing on a paved surface, two on the left where an adult points while holding a child, and three on the right where an adult aims a long stick or wand while two companions stand close behind. The overall image is rendered in fine engraved lines and stippling with a monochrome tone.
