Amsterdam: 1679-1684., battle, beach, plan of battle, Nieuwpoort (Belgium), Period, 1600-07-02, A wide engraved scene divided horizontally into sky, a distant narrow band of sea with many sailing ships, a central flat shore area filled with numerous small groups of tiny human figures arranged in rectangular formations and interacting with small carts and fortification-like structures, and a foreground of textured dunes and hills. The upper sky contains parallel horizontal hatch lines and several large billowing clouds rendered with fine line shading, and a ribbon-like cartouche with folded edges floating near the top. The distant sea shows a dense line of sailing vessels of various sizes with masts and sails. The central shore area is populated by clustered arrangements of tiny stylized soldiers, some on foot and some appearing to handle equipment, with repetitive square and rectangular barricade patterns and occasional small cannon-like shapes and plumes of smoke. The foreground dunes are intricately crosshatched to show contours and texture, with small figures and scattered equipment placed among the undulating terrain. The entire image is monochrome with delicate line engraving and fine stippling throughout.
