In the foreground several figures are engaged in activity near the water: two men strain to pull a large log, another figure sits nearby, and a woman stands by a cart. Soldiers or men with long poles stand to the left near an arched gateway in a building. Trees and bushes appear along the banks, and small boats and wooden structures sit on the water. The sky is filled with layered, softly hatched clouds, and a flock of birds is visible above the distant treeline. The buildings display windows, stepped gables, a tall tower with a steep roof and a weather vane, and textured brickwork and masonry details.
