Egyptian obelisk, drawing, album page, The drawing is part of an album., Italy, c. 1550 - c. 1650, draftsman (artist), materials by function, paper, ink, pen, brush, pen in brown with brush in gray, height 495 mm x width 83 mm, obelisk, needle, A tall, narrow obelisk drawn in monochrome stands on a multi-tiered rectangular pedestal; the obelisk tapers to a pointed top crowned with a small decorative cap, a star-like ornament, and a cross above it. The obelisk shaft is densely covered with rows of carved symbols and pictorial elements arranged in horizontal bands, including stylized birds, seated and standing human figures in profile, various animal shapes, and other geometric and symbolic motifs depicted in a linear, relief-like style. Near the base of the shaft are two larger human figures facing each other with a horizontal element between them, and above and below are additional oval-framed motifs containing seated figures. The pedestal consists of several molded layers with a broad upper plinth supporting the obelisk, showing simple linear shading and contouring. The drawing is on a plain, lightly textured background with slight spotting and marginal discoloration.
