Volumes one and two appeared in 1612. In 1615 the third part appeared, and in 1628 part four appeared. In 1637 Vitale Mascardi published the first reissue of the entire set with numbering., garden, palace, Vatican City, Apostolic Palace, A detailed black and white engraving showing an elevated bird’s-eye view of a complex of classical buildings and formal gardens, with long colonnaded façades, multi-story rectangular structures, numerous arched windows and doors, and a tall tower with a clocklike face. In the foreground a fortified wall with a prominent arched gateway borders a paved area; inside the walls are courtyards, terraces, and a large rectangular garden with geometric planting beds and central fountains. To one side a curved, tiered theaterlike structure faces a semi-circular enclosure, while nearby a circular fountain sprays water. Beyond the main buildings are terraced gardens, tree-lined avenues, planted groves, and a variety of small pavilions and garden rooms set within formal parterres. Hills and distant walls frame the top of the scene, and decorative cartouches and a large coat of arms appear in the corners of the print. The lower part of the image contains dense blocks of printed text.
