Horsemen charge and ride across the field toward clustered infantry while wagons drawn by teams of horses are positioned behind the lines. In the distance a walled town with towers, steep-roofed houses, and a gate stands on a rise, with figures moving near its walls and a bridge leading toward it. Rolling hills, trees, and scattered buildings dot the landscape beyond the fighting, and in the foreground two standing figures gesture toward the scene, one leaning on a spade. Clouds are etched across the sky above the whole composition.
