Under the arch a solitary figure in a long cloak and head covering stands with their back mostly to the viewer, facing toward a lighter street beyond. Beyond the arch there are building facades with recessed windows, a wall-mounted lantern, and a short flight of steps leading up to a doorway. In the foreground the cobbled street curves and shows rutted, linear marks, and a low curb or drain runs along one side. The overall scene is composed of fine, closely worked lines and areas of darker shading that emphasize the arch and the contrast between the shadowed passage and the illuminated street beyond.
