Surrounding her are several young naked children with curly hair; one child kneels on the ledge to her right holding a small tube to his eye, another reclines at her feet reaching toward a rolled sheet held on the ledge, a child on her left leans forward looking at a small object in his hands, and a child near the left edge kneels beside a small box or apparatus. Behind them heavy draperies frame a distant landscape with trees, clouds, and a building with classical architectural elements visible through an opening. Decorative carved stonework adorns the ledge and the foreground, and the entire scene is enclosed within a thick oval border.
