David Teniers likely produced an oil study on canvas or panel (so-called pasticcio) of every painting in the collection of Leopold William of Austria, which served as models for the printmakers. It is not always clear whether the pasticci were made by him or by his studio. Not all pasticci have survived., John the Baptist, possible attributes: book, reed cross, baptismal cup, honeycomb, lamb, staff, A monochrome engraving shows a seated bearded man with a halo, draped in loose robes that expose one shoulder and part of his chest, looking upward and resting one hand against a tree trunk. A young lamb sits on his lap with its head turned slightly to the side. The man holds a long staff topped with a banner that extends upward beside him. Trees and foliage fill the background behind the figures, and the man’s legs and sandals are visible beneath the folds of his clothing. The image is framed by a narrow border and shows the texture of engraved lines throughout.
