This print is part of an album., printmaker: Jan van Troyen, Southern Netherlands (possibly), after painting by David Teniers (II), after painting by Annibale Carracci, Italy, Brussels, grantor of privilege: Spanish Crown, 1660, paper, etching, engraving, height 242 mm x width 170 mm, Print after the painting by Carracci which is in the collection of The Courtauld Gallery in London. The painted copy by Teniers is in the Princes Gate Collection. David Teniers probably produced an oil study on canvas or panel (so-called pasticcio) of every painting in the collection of Leopold William of Austria, which served as models for the printmakers. It is not always clear whether the pasticci were made by him or by his studio. Not all pasticci have survived., Cupid vanquishing Pan, A monochrome etched scene shows a reclining adult male figure partly on his back with arms raised and a cherubic child with small wings perched atop him, pressing down on his chest. The child has curly hair and is leaning forward with one hand touching the man's forehead and the other extended toward his face. The man appears bald on top with hair at the sides and his legs are bent beneath him. To the right a cluster of tall slender trees with detailed foliage rises beside them. In the background a landscape with rolling hills stretches away toward a small domed building partially obscured by vegetation. The foreground includes scattered objects on the ground such as a bundle of straps and a short wooden pallet near a woven mat, all rendered with fine line work. The sky above is filled with horizontal etched lines and faint cloud forms.
