Jugement Dernier, The Last Judgment, print, Allegory on the downfall of the French Revolution and the fall of Napoleon inspired by Michelangelo's 'Last Judgment' incorporating forty-nine characters from administrative, political, and artistic life. The figures are numbered in pen corresponding to an accompanying legend with a partly printed, partly handwritten list of names. The depicted figures include 'Bonaparte', 'Murat', 'Fesch Cardinal', and 'Hortense ex-reine de Hollande', after painting by Michelangelo, Vatican City, publisher: attributed to Vallardi, c. 1815, Michelangelo, Vallardi, printmaker, after painting by, publisher, Attributed to, paper, etching, aquatint, hand coloring, etching and aquatint colored in yellow, blue and red, height 338 mm x width 523 mm x height 242 mm x width 97 mm, height 260 mm x width 378 mm x height 302 mm x width 114 mm, Person, Hortense Eugénie de Beauharnais (Queen of Holland), Napoleon I (Emperor of the French), Joseph Fesch, Last Judgement, Napoleonic Wars, A crowded scene of a large wooden boat on choppy water filled with many mostly nude muscular figures in various contorted poses, some wearing small cloth head coverings and some draped in pieces of fabric, with one figure at the stern standing and holding a long oar raised above his shoulder and a flowing cloak behind him, while others lean over the boat’s edge reaching toward figures in the water who grasp at hands extended from a rocky shore; there are figures with anguished facial expressions, one with red liquid flowing from the mouth into the sea, a cluster of figures on the right including a partially draped figure entwined with a coiled serpent, and additional heads and torsos visible among the crowded bodies against a pale sky.
