The thirst, Figures drinking by a spring in the desert, French etchings from 1879, L'eau-forte en 1879, print, Series number, 28, 30, watermark, collector's mark: 'AFE v S', printmaker: Benjamin Constant (1845-1902), publisher: widow Alfred Cadart, Paris, 1879, paper, etching, drypoint, intaglio printmaking technique, height 168 mm x width 277 mm, thirst, desert, A wide pale scene shows a stretch of flat ground meeting a faint horizontal line in the distance. Near the right edge a figure cloaked in layered robes sits astride a tall horse facing left, the horse drawn with fine lines and a bridle or reins visible; the rider’s head is covered with a hood or wrap. Closer to the center a person kneels or bends low beside a cluster of animals lying on the ground; the animals are depicted in various sprawled postures with textured shading and visible limbs, and one animal appears to have its head turned toward the viewer. Toward the left a seated figure wrapped in cloth sits facing the horizon, holding or leaning against a long vertical staff. The overall image is rendered in delicate monochrome line work and etching-like shading across a broad empty sky and flat foreground.
