Visscher (II), Amsterdam, 1585, 1643, paper, engraving, gravure, height 205 mm x width 125 mm, Christ before King Herod, sometimes a gorgeous robe is brought (Luke 23:8-11), A wide engraved scene divided by a vertical margin shows an interior with a raised platform and steps, columns and draped canopies. On the left side a seated figure in flowing robes and a turbaned hat gestures with one hand toward a standing bearded man in simple robes whose hands are restrained, surrounded by several soldiers and attendants in varied helmets and armor, one kneeling in armor at the platform edge. On the right side a crowned seated ruler in a decorated cloak extends his hand toward a group of standing figures including armored soldiers and men in cloaks and hats, while architectural details and distant figures are visible through an archway behind them. The engraving is detailed with fine hatching and crosshatching, showing textured fabrics, ornamental armor, spears and standards, carved chair arms, and shadowed architectural elements.
