Diana and Actaeon, Series of lithographs, Receuil de dessins sur pierre, print, album page, Print is part of an album., 1818 - 1819, printmaker, paper, lithography, height 299 mm x width 437 mm, Diana bathing with her nymphs, Actaeon changed into a stag: as punishment for seeing her bathe, Diana changes Actaeon, the hunter, into a stag (Ovid, Metamorphoses III 193), A detailed pencil drawing shows three partially draped women seated on a rocky ledge inside a cave opening, two of them crouched and one leaning against the rock while holding a cloth to her head; the figures have curled hair and soft shading on their skin and drapery. Rough textured rock walls surround them, with foliage and small branches visible near the top of the opening. A narrow passage at the right leads outward where a standing figure appears on a rocky outcrop beyond the cave rim, and a dog-like animal is near that figure. In the foreground near the cave edge there is a large rounded vessel set on the ground beside a woven basket and some cloth. The scene is rendered in fine cross-hatching and tonal pencil strokes.
