The scene is supplemented at the top with a painted sky., castle, fortress, Coucy-le-Château, Château de Coucy, A wide pale sky fills the upper part of the image with soft horizontal bands of blue, cream, and pale pink, and large rounded cloud shapes in muted lavender and blue. Below the sky, a long fortified town stretches across the middle ground behind high stone walls punctuated by towers and spires of varying heights, with rooftops in muted reds and blues. In front of the walls, rolling sandy and grassy hills slope down toward a winding river in the foreground. A small wooden bridge crosses the river, and a few tiny figures and riders are visible on the path near the bridge. Vegetation includes scattered trees and low shrubs on the slopes and along the riverbank.
