Le Charivari was a humorous newspaper with caricatures and (political) cartoons., caricatures (human types), Narcissus, gazing in a fountain, falls in love with his own reflection, possibly the nymph Echo peeps at the scene, A charcoal or pencil drawing shows a thin, nude figure with a wreath of flowers on the head leaning forward on a rocky ledge with hands splayed and elbows bent, the torso elongated and hips raised while the legs extend backward and the feet point upward; the figure’s head tilts down with eyes closed and hair curling beneath the floral crown. The rocky ledge is light against a darker background and slopes toward a body of water below, where rippled horizontal strokes suggest reflections and a partially submerged head with closed eyes appears near the lower left. Dark, swirling foliage and tree forms occupy the upper background, creating a contrast behind the figure, and additional rocky textures and plant clumps are visible along the cliff face and water’s edge, all rendered in soft, sketchy shading.
