Le Charivari was a humorous newspaper with caricatures and (political) cartoons., caricatures (human types), Thetis dips Achilles in the Styx, A monochrome drawing shows a robed woman kneeling on a rocky ledge inside a dark cave, holding a small child upside down by one leg over a still pool; the woman's face is turned toward the child, her hair partially covered by a cloth, and her arms and draped garments are rendered with strong, flowing lines; the child’s face is contorted, water appears to drip from the child’s mouth and body, and vertical streaks suggest splashes or streams falling into the water below; the cave interior is shaded with dense, sweeping charcoal strokes and jagged rock contours, and the pool surface reflects horizontal striations and ripples.
