Two pack mules with soldiers advancing in the background, print, book illustration, printmaker: Pierre Chenu, France, printmaker: Charles Nicolas Cochin (II), after design by Jean-Baptiste Oudry, 1755 - 1759, paper, etching, engraving, proof for letter, etching and engraving, height 307 mm x width 226 mm, A sepia-toned engraving shows a loaded donkey in the foreground with packs and barrels strapped to its back and a decorative cloth and tassel draped over its body; the donkey faces right with a downward head and visible bridle. Behind it a second donkey is partly visible carrying more goods. In the middle ground a dirt path winds past sparse vegetation and low shrubs toward a small building with a pitched roof and a simple window, a wooden fence running nearby. To the left a larger multi-story stone building with small windows and a steep roof stands on higher ground. A group of people, some carrying long poles, are gathered near the larger building and appear in various poses. A tall tree with a rounded crown rises between the buildings. The sky is filled with layered clouds and textured shading, and the whole scene is enclosed within a decorative lined border.
