Coin d'atelier (original title), Shoe, sandals and a fantasy figure, print, printmaker: Philip Zilcken, 1867 - 1890, Philip Zilcken, printmaker, paper, etching, drypoint, intaglio printmaking technique, zinc etching and drypoint, with plate tone, height 170 mm x width 88 mm, shoes, sandals, ornament derived from animal forms, A vertical monochrome etching showing a variety of textured, organic and shoe-like forms arranged across a speckled, scratched background; at the top right an elaborate, curving decorative element with leaflike and scroll motifs emerges, its lines dense and crosshatched, while lower on the right a long, dark, slender shape with heavy linear shading sits above an irregular, rounded form that also bears dense crosshatching; toward the center left a curved, elongated object with a tufted, brushlike end and fine, radiating strokes extends diagonally, and near the bottom a low-heeled, slip-on shoe rendered with layered contour lines and shaded surfaces rests on the ground; the left margin features areas of closely hatched vertical textures and scattered stippling, and the whole composition is overlaid with random clusters of dots and fine scratches that create an aged, worn surface.
