Study of a flock of sheep, Animal studies by Cooper, Études d'Animaux de Cooper, print, Series number, 24, printmaker: Pierre Frédéric Lehnert, printer (person): Aubert & Cie., Paris, publisher: Aubert & Cie., 1838 - 1840, Pierre Frédéric Lehnert, Aubert & Cie., printmaker, printer (person), publisher, paper, tone lithography, height 239 mm x width 330 mm, sheep, herd, flock, A group of sheep is depicted resting and standing on a gently undulating grassy terrain, drawn in fine pencil or charcoal lines on a light tan background. Several sheep lie curled or stretched out in the foreground with textured wool and relaxed expressions, while others stand nearby with heads lowered to graze or turned to the side. In the midground a darker-haired sheep contrasts with the lighter fleeces around it, and a few more sheep are scattered farther back on small rises. The ground shows sketched grass, clumps of vegetation, and subtle shadows, and there are faint smudges and sketch marks across the paper.
