Dancing couples with a duo of strings, print, printmaker: Willem Linnig (II), 1852 - 1890, paper, etching, intaglio printmaking technique, height 144 mm x width 269 mm, more than one couple dancing, musician at work, string instruments (bowed), A wide ink drawing shows a crowded indoor scene with a group of people dancing and musicians playing. Women in long dresses with full skirts and fitted bodices move with raised arms and joined hands, their hair arranged in buns or covered with headscarves, while men in coats and hats stand or lean among them. Garlands and draped fabric hang above the group. On the right, a standing musician plays a violin and a seated musician leans over a large stringed instrument held between his knees, with a bow near the strings. The figures are rendered with fine cross-hatched lines and flowing contours, and small scattered floral shapes lie on the floor beneath their feet. The overall palette is monochrome ink on a light background.
