Two men at an anvil in the smithy, print, printmaker: Willem Linnig (II), 1864, paper, etching, intaglio printmaking technique, height 197 mm x width 252 mm, smith, blacksmith, tools, aids, implements, crafts and industries: anvil, A detailed monochrome etching shows two men working at a forge in a rustic courtyard with rough stone walls and archways. One man leans forward, hammering on an anvil while the other stands nearby holding a long tool and watching. Above them a wooden balcony with vertical slats spans the scene, and a ledge and overhang cast shadows across the courtyard. The surfaces of the walls and ground are textured with dense crosshatching, and organic shapes of wear and vegetation appear along the stone. Various architectural openings and recesses are visible around the workspace, and tools and scattered materials lie on the ground near the figures.
