Ugolin in the prison of hunger, Ugolino della Gherardesca with his two sons and two grandsons imprisoned without food in the Torre dei Gualandi, print, printmaker: Jan Van de Kerkhove (signed by artist), 1876, paper, etching, drypoint, intaglio printmaking technique, height 169 mm x width 277 mm, prison, jail, violent death by starvation, A sepia-toned etching shows a group of people in a stone interior. A central bearded man with disheveled hair sits on a raised seat wearing a patterned garment and a cloak, his expression solemn. Around him are several figures in varied poses: one kneeling at his feet with a hand to their chin, another reclining with eyes closed and head resting against the seated man’s leg, a third figure leans in from the right with an upturned face and hand on the seated man’s arm, and a fourth figure to the left covers their eyes with one hand while raising the other. Stone arches and a textured wall form the background, and the floor is rendered with tile-like lines and shading. Detailed crosshatching and fine linework create the clothing folds, facial features, and architectural surfaces throughout the scene.
