Each portrait is an illustration accompanying the biography of an artist or scholar. Most of the portraits were produced by Nicolas de Larmessin (162), 93 by De Boulonois and a third by unidentified printmakers. This refers to an illustration on p. 249, part I., Person, Pierre Pithou, historical persons, The image shows an engraved portrait of a man inside an oval frame wearing a high, ruffled collar and a hat with a broad, folded brim; he has a mustache and a pointed beard, and his clothing includes a buttoned coat with a visible shoulder drape. The oval frame rests on a decorative cartouche with scroll-like elements beneath it, and there is a column of printed text and an ornamental roundel below the cartouche. The background of the portrait features closely spaced horizontal hatch lines, and the page exhibits a light, aged paper tone.
