Winter landscape with old woman on a path to a village, print, printmaker: Maurice Hagemans, 1862 - 1910, paper, etching, drypoint, intaglio printmaking technique, height 276 mm x width 199 mm, road, path, winter, human activities (the four seasons of the year), A tall, leafless tree with many twisting, gnarled branches dominates the scene, its dark trunk textured with deep lines; beside it are other bare trees with interlacing branches filling the upper part of the image. In the lower center, a solitary figure wearing a long, heavy coat and a hooded cape walks away from the viewer along a narrow, winding dirt path that curves to the right. A low, broken fence and a pile of rough stones and sticks run along the left side of the path, and faint outlines of more distant trees and undergrowth appear in the background. The overall image is rendered in fine, detailed lines and shading, creating a monochromatic, sketchlike appearance.
